This Mexican-born painter and muralist studied painting in his native country before moving to Europe in 1907. Rivera exhibited his works in shows all over the world including Paris, Madrid, New York and Mexico. In 1929, Rivera married Frida Kahlo, a famous painter in her own right; their marriage eventually became as famous as their creations. Rivera was mostly recognized for his politically turbulent and anti-religious messages which were often prominently displayed in his art. One example of this, is a mural he created in 1948 for the Hotel de Prado in Mexico which contained the phrase “God does not exist”. The words on the mural were covered for almost a decade. Rivera’s traditional folk style is still imitated to this day. Rivera died of heart failure in Mexico City, Mexico in 1957. |
